Unemployability root cause of unemployment in Nagaland

  • DIMAPUR — In a significant initiative to address the growing concern of unemployment in Nagaland, the North East Institute for Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), in collaboration with MRF Limited and Step UP International, organised a job fair offering 265 vacancies on Friday at NEISSR campus, 7th Mile in Chümoukedima.

  • Addressing the participants, Dr. Fr. CP Anto, Principal of NEISSR, emphasised that unemployability is the root cause of the crisis and that youth need to be skilled, adaptable, and prepared for the workforce, an update stated.

  • He highlighted that the institute, having closely interacted with the youth of Nagaland, recognised the urgent need to create such employment opportunities.

  • “It is everyone’s responsibility—parents, churches, educational institutions, and the community—to motivate and support the youth to take up jobs”, he said.

  • The job fair was marked by the presence of key recruiters and stakeholders. Venkataramanan R, HR executive at MRF Limited, and Anitha Indira Bhai, project director of Step UP International, announced scope for over 500 youths from Nagaland. The recruiters also stressed the importance of developing a professional work culture in the region.

  • The event brought to light the stark reality of educated unemployment in the state. The district employment officer, Dimapur, shared that more than 68,000 educated individuals are currently unemployed in Nagaland.

  • “There is an urgent need for research into why the majority of youth prefer government jobs over private sector opportunities and why they are hesitant to explore employment outside the state”, the update stated.

  • “In its proactive role, NEISSR is collaborating with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the National Career Service, and AIDA Don Bosco, to facilitate job placements and career counseling. The institute reiterated its commitment to empowering the youth through skill-based training and strategic partnerships”.

  • As part of the initiative, walk-in interviews will be held for MRF LEAD and NAPS programme and English language trainers for Step UP International on April 26 at Don Bosco College, Kohima.

  • “This job fair stands as a call to action for the people of Nagaland to embrace available opportunities and foster a culture of employment and growth,” the update stated.
