Nagaland SEC announces bypolls in three ULB wards, with polling on June 16 and counting on June 19

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday notified fresh elections to three vacant wards under Chümoukedima, Wokha and Atoizu town councils, with polling scheduled for June 16 and counting of votes on June 19.
According to a notification issued by the SEC, T John Longkumer, the bye-elections will be held for Ward 11 (Chaara) under Chümoukedima Town Council, Ward 8 (Tsumang B) under Wokha Town Council, and Ward 9 (Samba Ghoki) under Atoizu Town Council.
The election programme was officially published on May 15. Filing of nominations will take place from May 25 to May 29 up to 3 pm, while scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for June 1.
Candidates may file applications for revision of scrutiny orders between June 2 and June 3, with decisions on such applications to be made on June 4.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 5 up to 3 pm, after which the final list of contesting candidates and polling stations will be published.
Polling will be conducted on June 16 between 7.30 am and 4 pm. In the event of a re-poll, it will be held on June 18. Counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on June 19 from 8 am onwards at the designated counting centres.
The SEC stated that the electoral roll published on April 12, 2024 under Rule 10 of the Nagaland Municipal Election Rules 2023 will be used for the elections.
MCC comes into force
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into immediate effect within the jurisdictions of the three town councils, including the poll-bound wards, and will remain in force until completion of the election process.
The MCC will apply to candidates, political parties operating within the respective town council jurisdictions, and the state government in matters relating to observance of the code.
In a press release, the SEC informed that training programmes for returning officers, assistant returning officers and district-level master trainers have already been conducted ahead of the polls.
Election observers will also be deployed in the concerned town councils to assist in ensuring free and fair elections, while other institutional measures are being put in place for the smooth conduct of the bye-elections.
He appealed to election officials and security personnel engaged in the process to discharge their duties with “professional commitment” to ensure free and fair polls.
He also called upon electors to exercise their franchise to make the election “participatory and meaningful”, and appealed to political parties, candidates, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring a peaceful and smooth election process.
