United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) members protest in Kohima demanding immediate implementation of a five-day working week and uniform Performance Linked Incentive scheme

KOHIMA — Members of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) staged a protest in Kohima on Thursday, demanding immediate implementation of a five-day working week and the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
Bankers representing different unions and associations under the UFBU umbrella staged the protest outside the SBI office near DC Complex, Kohima, after their working hours.
Nilesh Jha, Secretary of All India Bank Employees’ Association Kohima District, questioned why the Central government was delaying implementation of the five-day working week and PLI.
He said that their first priority was the five-day working week, for which an agreement was signed on March 8, 2024. However, it was yet to be implemented despite more than two years having passed.

“There is a shortage of staff all over India, and employees are required to work even on holidays, while employees in other departments enjoy their holidays,” he said.
According to Jha, this affects bankers’ social and family lives, and he called for immediate implementation of the five-day working week.
He added that the protest was also to demand equal and uniform implementation of the PLI scheme.
He explained that branch offices handle all services, including customer services, implementation of government schemes and work beyond regular office hours. However, when it comes to the PLI scheme, a branch office receives a maximum of INR 1 lakh, while managements at head, zonal or circle offices receive INR 10 lakh and above, he claimed.
The UFBU has outlined a phase-wise agitation programme and plans to intensify its protests from August 26.
