Two boys from Manipur namely Master Maurice Yengkhom (14) son of Yengkhom Zunu of Yaiskul and Master Chongtham Kuber Meitei (12) son of Chongtham Tomba Meitei of Tera Noukrakpam, among the 25 national bravery award winners, were nominated for bravery award in a function organised by Indian Council for Child Welfare in New Delhi on Monday.
“The children will receive the award from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 24 and later hey will participate in Republic Day Parade, on Rajpath, New Delhi January 26,” says Lt Col Ajay Kumar Sharma, PRO, Defence Wing,Ministry of Defence,Imphal who is the Officer-in-Charge Republic Day parade Commentary in New Delhi in a release which was forwarded to media.
Master Maurice Yengkhom while playing with 13 years old Hijam Rodin and five other cousins on the terrace of their building on March 8 last year, realized that Rodin has been struck by electric current, probably through naked wire.
Maurice tried to pull Rodin but was thrown back due to electric shock. Doing quick thinking and having presence of mind, Maurice used a broken cane chair and hit Rodin with it, thereby freeing him from electric current eve though he unconscious was burnt on face and feet. He was subsequently taken to hospital. Thus the heroic deed of Maurice saved the life of Rodin.
“When I held Rodin and I myself got electric shock, I understood that he has been struck by electric current. At that point of time I was just thinking of doing something fast to save Rodin and the thought of danger to my own life did not come to my mind,” says Maurice who wants to become an engineer.
On the other hand 12 year old Chongtham Kuber jumped into the water and pulled up a girl of his age who was found drowning in the 10 feet deep pond on March 8 afternoon last year.
Kuber’s heroic act came to light soon after noticing the struggling girl in the pond while he was playing football and saved a precious life of the girl.
