Dimapur, Oct. 5: In an apparent case of custodial death, one person identified as Rolongse Sangtam (aged 18) committed suicide inside a police station in Mon Town on the night of Oct. 4.
According to a police source, he was found hanging by his belt at around 9:30 pm on October 4, while in police lockup in Mon town.
The sub divisional police officer (SDPO) in Mon, Vrinda Shukla informed Eastern Mirror that the deceased was picked up from the town area for ‘creating ruckus disorder’ with another person. Shukla informed that it was routine to pick up troublemakers and keep them in lockup for few hours to discipline and later release them.
Two police personnel, the assistant sub inspector (ASI) and the lock-up sentry on duty, have been suspended in this connection due to negligence of duty. Shukhla informed that the belt should have been seized ‘as protocol’ while the body search was being conducted.
The victim was employed as a handyman in a night bus running between Mon and Dimapur. The cause of death was suffocation, according to police.
