- IMPHAL — Two
earthquakes struck Manipur in the early hours of Wednesday with an interval of
roughly one and a half hours, according to preliminary reports from the
National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Ministry of Earth Sciences. Fortunately,
no damage or casualties have been reported at the time of filing this report.
- The first tremor, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, was
recorded at 1:54 am with its epicentre in Churachandpur district. The second, a
milder quake of 2.5 magnitude, struck at 2:26 am with the epicentre located in
Noney district, the NCS stated.

- Residents in Bishnupur district, which borders
Churachandpur, and those in the state capital Imphal, felt both quakes. “We
felt the first earthquake clearly at home,” said a resident of Ningthoukhong
village in Bishnupur who also works as a district news correspondent for All
India Radio Imphal.
- In a post on X (formerly Twitter), NCS reported:
"Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.2, Occurred on 28-05-2025, 01:54:29 IST, Lat:
24.46N & Long: 94.70E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Churachandpur,

- This is not the first time Manipur has experienced multiple
tremors in a short span. On March 5, 2025, two back-to-back earthquakes
measuring 5.7 and 4.1 were reported in Kamjong district—bordering
Myanmar—though no damage was recorded.
- Manipur also witnessed a devastating quake on January 4,
2016, when a 6.7-magnitude earthquake claimed eight lives and caused widespread
structural damage, including to the iconic ‘Nupi Keithel’ (women’s market) in
Imphal.
