Twelfth Manipur Legislative Assembly: 4th session to be held on August 29

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting of the Manipur Legislative Assembly took a decision in this regard.

IMPHAL — As per the calendar issued by the assembly secretary, the one-day session on August 29 would have obituary reference, presentation of committee reports, if any, and other businesses.

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, which was held at the Speaker's office chamber in Imphal on Saturday took a decision in this regard.

The step has been taken up after the state governor, Anusuiya Uikey, summoned the session on August 22 following the state cabinet’s recommendation.

However, it was not clear till the filing of the copy whether the opposition Congress legislators would attend the session or not as five Congress MLAs led by its leader and former chief minister, O Ibobi Singh, has opposed the time allocation of the assembly session.

“We don’t accept the proposed time allocation of the upcoming monsoon session (of assembly). I appealed, I suggested, I requested for a minimum of a five day session but they didn’t accept it. They said because of the prevailing situation we’ll sit only one day,” said Ibobi after attending the BAC meeting. He further questioned as to what the members would discuss on pertinent issued in one day.

Singh said that he has given a dissent note saying that one day session is not in the interest of the public.

Congress has five legislators in the house of 60-members.

Earlier, 10 Kuki MLAs including two ministers Letpao Haokip (Horticulture) and Nemcha Kipgen (Commerce & Industries) had expressed their inability to attend the assembly session. Minister Nemcha Kipgen had also reportedly written a letter to the Assembly Speaker in this regard.

The last Manipur legislative assembly session, which commenced from February 2, 2023, was adjourned sine-die on March 3, 2023.

Violence broke out in the state in early part of May, which has so far claimed more than 150 lives and displaced more than 50,000 people besides burning many villages.
