Dimapur, June 1: Tuensang’s first foray into cardamom cultivation is showing results. The project director of Tuensang’s District Rural Development Agency issued a note this week informing about a harvest of cardamom that began as a small plantation project in a number of rural development zones in the district in 2015.
The agency also attached a photograph showing bundles of what appear to freshly-harvested cardamom plants gathered at a house.
In line with the objectives of the department of Rural Development to provide livelihood resources to the rural people, the District Rural Development Agency of Tuensang had undertaken cardamom plantation in 21 villages. The villages are located in nine rural development blocks and under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee convergence program during 2015-2016.
To make the program successful, the first training program for farmers from the selected villages was organized at Tuensang town in November in 2015. Another training-demonstration program focused on plantation was imparted during April 11-April 14, this year.
The field preparations began with jungle clearance from December 2015 till January this year. Plantation was carried out during April and May.
