Dimapur, Sep. 24 (EMN): Following the brutal killing of one Jiten Gogoi, a truck driver, in Dimapur on September 22, various associations representing truckers and truck owners have threatened to stop all trucks from entering Dimapur if the Nagaland government does not fulfil their demands within three days.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Dimapur District Truck Owners’ Association, Dimapur Truck Drivers’ Union, Dimapur District Truck Driver Welfare Trade Union, Lahorijan and Khatkhati Truckers Welfare Society and Bokajan Truck Owners’ Association, have demanded the state government to give immediate compensation to the victim’s family and end the ‘lease system’ employed by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).
They stated that the victim was the sole bread-earner in the family; thus, the compensation to help sustain the family.
Root cause
According to the associations, the DMC’s lease system was the “root cause of these entire problems” as the leasees are actively involved in passing details of goods vehicle to all the miscreants.
“The present situation has created fear among the drivers as the drivers are not willing to enter Dimapur (Nagaland) until their safety and protection are fully assured. The internal conflict of taxation among the so-called transporters/brokers based in Dimapur has created a fear psychology among the truckers,” it stated, adding that they also don’t allow truckers to be provided with police escort while entering Dimapur.
