A driver and a handyman of a truck have been kidnapped by suspected insurgents at Koubru Leikai under Sapermeina Police Station of Senapati district, according to reports.
Sapermeina is located along National Highway 102 some 35 km from the Manipur capital Imphal. The highway kidnapping took place on yesterday, Wednesday around 2:30 pm, the reports added.
The empty truck was heading towards Dimapur to transport goods. One Anush Manditta, son of Subash Manditta, hailing from Haryana was stated to be the owner of the truck.
A team of Sapermeina police searched Koubru Leikai area following the incident. There, the police recovered the Ashok Leyland truck but the duo were found missing from the site.
Abduction of transporters along the highway (Imphal-Dimapur road) by armed insurgents for extortion or ransom demands is often reported in the state.
The police with the help of Assam Rifles are looking for the abducted transporters.
Rally organized against extortion demands
A large number of people staged a protest rally in Kangpokpi town against extortion demands by different insurgent groups.
Kangpokpi is located about 50 km north of Imphal along Imphal-Dimapur road. The demonstration was organized by the Kangpokpi Women’s Union.
The protesters, mostly women, gathered at Thomas Ground around 11 am and kicked off the rally which covered different roads in the town. The rally later returned to the same ground and ended there.
They held different placards denouncing extortion demands by various outfits.
One of the demonstrators said the armed groups have intensified monetary demands from shop keepers and government employees in and around Kangpokpi in recent times.
She appealed to the groups to stop such activities and withdraw extortion demands immediately.
