KOHIMA, JULY 6: The reality of tribalism among the Naga people in Nagaland is here to stay, notwithstanding the fact that it continue to be a road block to community relations, opportunities and on development of the land and people in general. The only way to deciding its result, a state politician has speculated, now depend on the people and how they use it.
The observations were given by Member of the Parliament KG Kenye during an event organized by gazette officers in Kohima town.
The Chakhesang Gazetted Officers’ Association held their 19th general session on Wednesday at the State Academy Hall in Kohima town. The Member of Rajya Sabha for Nagaland KG Kenye was the ‘speaker’ of the event.
Addressing the gathering, Kenye said it was important to know one’s history in order to comprehend and determine his future. Stating that tribalism was here to stay in the state of Nagaland ‘with its positive and negative aspects as well as with its advantages and disadvantages,’ Kenye said ‘it depends on the people which way to go.’ The politician urged the community of officers to put in sincere efforts towards unity and progress of the people.
Expressing pride at the good number of officers, the Member of Parliament also urged them to ‘work hand in glove’ with their political leaders and ‘other leaders’ in unity and work towards the progress of the society as a whole.
Also, Vevo Sapu of the association said in his presidential address that as officers in the government machineries, they had moral responsibility ‘to do something more with feeling for the land, the people and to give their best to the community.’
Also, emphasizing on the need for an officer who is ‘alive’ and ‘progressive’ in today’s time, Sapu said that the society was in need of officer who would generate new ideas and new conceptions in order to change the society for the better.
‘The destiny of our people lies in our hands because we are the people who are at the helm of affairs in implementing the policies of the government,’ Sapu told the officers.
The officer also acknowledged the pioneering officers of the community who given shape to ‘the development process’ which helped the Chakhesang Nagaland community become a modern society. Sapu asserted that they cannot afford to remain passive at this juncture, but apply their minds for a prosperous and affluent community, and leave a positive legacy to the future generations.
The officer also called upon the members of the association to ‘join hands’ and move towards new horizons with ‘truthfulness and dedicated service above self-interest for the well being and advancement of its people.’
Kekhwengulo Lea, president of the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) also addressed the event. In his speech, Lea said that the community was still economically backward, although it was slowly emerging ‘at par with other tribes in other fields.’ Calling for unity among the members of the community, he urged the officers to continue their works for the benefit and welfare of the upcoming generation.
Also commenting on the ‘framework agreement’, Lea said that the organization will not comment unless the content
of the ‘framework’ had been made known to the people.
Another person, Visielie Kezo, OSD of the Finance department has asked the officers to ‘make a better place wherever they were and with sincerity, honesty and devotion to one’s work.’
During the event, the association elected a new team of office bearers to lead the organization for the tenure 2016-2018. The new team is led by Zhothisa Dawhuo as their president and Darhu Shupao as their general secretary.
There are currently about 711 gazette officers from the Chakhesang Naga community from 27 villages.
