Nagaland sees trainings on beekeeping, livestock, ICT and climate-smart agriculture across districts.

DIMAPUR — Multiple training and awareness programmes on beekeeping, livestock management, agricultural extension, and climate-smart agriculture were conducted across Nagaland.
Beekeeping trainings in different districts
The All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP), Department of Entomology, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, conducted a series of six trainings across villages in Kohima, Peren, Phek, Chumoukedima, and Tuensang districts on the theme “Bees for better tomorrow” from February 6 to March 18.
According to an update, the trainings covered scientific beekeeping with stinging and stingless bees, conservation of wild Apis species, and meliponiculture. A total of 230 farmers and state officers participated.
The programmes included trainings at Thekrejuma village, Ruzaphema village, Khusomi village, and in-house sessions at SAS Nagaland University for farmers from Srihima, Medziphema, Chümoukedima, Beisumpuikam, Pungalwa, and Longkim.

A special training on “Scientific meliponiculture – rearing and management” was organised with participation of bee scientists from Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar.
During the trainings, meliponaries and apiaries were visited for demonstrations on rearing technologies. Participants were also given practical demonstrations on bees and pollinators during in-house sessions.
A total of 33 lectures and 22 demonstrations were conducted, along with hands-on training on practical aspects. Scientific bee boxes were distributed to participants at the conclusion of the programme.
Livestock, poultry health awareness in Jalukie
An awareness-cum-input distribution programme on “Animal and poultry health management” was held at Jalukie on March 18, organised by the Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, in collaboration with ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal, and funded by ICAR-CRPVD.
Dr. I Shakuntala, Dean of the college, emphasised acquiring technical knowledge on livestock and poultry healthcare management and urged farmers to produce maize, oil seeds and green grass to reduce feed costs.
A total of 30 farmers from the Peren district participated. Technical sessions covered transboundary diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and vaccination and deworming practices. Inputs including poultry feeders, waterers, livestock feed, vitamins, minerals, tonics, potas, and antiseptic materials were distributed.
SAMETI trains ATMA staff on ICT tools
The State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) conducted a three-day training programme for ATMA functionaries on “Skills for using ICT in agriculture extension” from March 17 to the 19th.
Topics included imparting agricultural knowledge through radio, agrometeorological services, digital marketing, and use of multimedia tools.
Practical sessions on application of AI and online platforms for agricultural knowledge dissemination and digital content creation were also conducted. A total of 29 ATMA functionaries attended the training.
10-day ICAR-sponsored training underway
A 10-day ICAR-sponsored short course on “Climate-Smart Agriculture: Tools and Techniques for Biotic and Abiotic Stress Management” was inaugurated at the Medziphema campus of Nagaland University on March 18 and will continue until March 27.
The programme is organised by the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, School of Agricultural Sciences, with support from the Agricultural Education Division of ICAR.
The course aims to equip participants with advanced tools and techniques to enhance agricultural resilience and sustainability in the face of climate variability.
