The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority is conducting disaster response training for youths in Dimapur district under Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme.

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, and the Central Training Institute (CTI) Home Guards and Civil Defence, under the aegis of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), are conducting the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) training for youth volunteers at the Central Training Institute, Toluvi, Dimapur.
According to a press release from Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer of NSDMA, the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) aims to develop a cadre of trained community volunteers who can act as immediate responders during disasters and emergencies.
The programme focuses on strengthening community-based disaster preparedness by equipping youth with essential life-saving and basic rescue skills.
The YAMS training programme in Nagaland commenced on July 14, 2025. Under the first phase of the programme, training programmes were conducted up to January 30, 2026, covering volunteers from various youth organisations.
The volunteers trained under the first phase included participants from the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), Bharat Scouts and Guides (BS&G) and the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS).
Building on the success of the first phase, the second phase of the training commenced on February 23, 2026, with volunteers undergoing training at CTI Toluvi.
Participants are undergoing both theoretical and practical training sessions covering first aid, emergency rescue methods and water rescue techniques, along with demonstrations and hands-on exercises designed to prepare them for real-life emergency situations.
The training programme is being conducted in batches and will continue till March 28, with participation from different youth organisations, including NCC, NYKS, NSS and Nagaland Bharat Scouts and Guides.
Under the YAMS programme in Nagaland, volunteers from various organisations are being trained to strengthen community-based disaster preparedness and response capacity across the state.
Procurement of Emergency Response Kits (ERK) for trained volunteers is currently under process, while the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for insurance coverage of volunteers is also under process.
