Dimapur, March 25 (EMN): State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (Sameti) organised a two-day training programme on “Management and rejuvenation of orchards and plantation crops” at Sameti, Medziphema on March 22 and 23.
The training programme was aimed at providing technical knowledge on management and re-plantation of old and uneconomical orchards to the participants, said a press release issued by director Sameti. It has been observed that the existing orchards are not able to meet the present requirements of the country because of poor quality planting materials, haphazard approaches and poor management, it added.
The resource persons of the programme were Dr Sarkar, assistant professor, department of Horticulture, N.U., SASRD; Dr Sentirenla Jamir, assistant professor, B.Voc, department of Horticulture, N.U., SASRD; and Dr Gracely Yepthomi, assistant professor, B.Voc, department of Horticulture, N.U., SASRD.
The resource persons spoke on topics including prospect, opportunities and strategy to improve the plantation sectors in nagaland; production technology of coconut and areca nut; production, rejuvenation techniques and processing of tea and coffee; rejuvenation of orchard; rejuvenation in litchi; rejuvenation in citrus; production; management practices of rubber and black pepper; management of orchard and soil management and pest management during the event.
Dr I Amenla, director Sameti and principal IETC, encouraged the participants to implement the knowledge they acquired during the training and create awareness amongst the farming community to harness sustainable livelihood in production enterprise. She also advised them to sensitise farmers about the importance of orchard management and rejuvenation of exhausted trees to make senile orchards productive and juvenile enhancing profitability.
Certificates and training handouts were distributed to the participants at the programme.
