The victims were reportedly members of Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Arogo who had attended the historic ‘Day of Repentance’ programme held on January 30 and 31 at Mokokchung. The event was organised by Mokokchung Town Ao Baptist Church Mission.
Traffic police confirmed that five individuals died in the accident. However, official details regarding the total number of passengers on the ill-fated bus and the number of injured are yet to be ascertained.
According to church members, around 44 people had travelled to Mokokchung for the prayer programme in a three-vehicle convoy. It is still unclear how many passengers were travelling in the bus that met with the accident.
Sources said that the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment even before police personnel arrived at the site. Police and emergency responders are currently carrying out recovery operations, and further details are awaited.
