Dimapur, Oct. 25 (EMN): Vehicular movement along Old Dhansiri Bridge and Nagarjan Police Point in Dimapur resumed on Tuesday after being suspended for one week.
About 403 trees along the stretch of Supermarket area were ordered to be cut down after gusty winds uprooted two trees on October 12 killing two persons, and injuring six.
Consequently, all vehicular movement had been suspended along the stretch to facilitate cutting of the trees from Nagarjan Police Point to Walford Petrol Pump.
On Tuesday, the fallen tree trunks and branches had not yet been fully cleared and logs were being loaded on trucks to be taken to the saw mill.
Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal, informed Eastern Mirror the felling of trees was permitted by the Forest department as such tall trees posed risk to public safety.
“It was not done randomly but looking into the situation, No Objection Certificate (NOC) was issued,” he said.
Regarding the street vendors, he said that the area is under Development Authority Nagaland (DAN), and until they have a joint meeting, he could not update any further course of action. He said they will “coordinate soon and update”.
When asked about the proposed park project to be developed in the area, he shared it was “still too early to comment” and the authorities concerned would need to deliberate more on the project.
