It appears that the Covid-19 pandemic has slowed down in severity to a great extent as the number of Covid cases is on the decline in the country. Currently, an average of four to five thousand people are affected by the virus daily, the lowest it’s been in 22 months. The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Covid-19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. As the global scenario is also improving fast, the global health body is contemplating on declaring it an endemic, which will be a great relief to the panic-stricken people worldwide. It is beyond a doubt that the pandemic has caused war-like destruction during the last two years. Apart from causing millions of deaths, it damaged the world economy so severely that it will take years for countries to achieve pre-pandemic growth rates, especially for poor nations. During the peak of multiple waves of the pandemic, there was not enough space in graveyards to bury departed souls. The pandemic ruthlessly exposed inefficiencies in the public health system all over the world, which could not offer proper treatment to affected persons, including providing Oxygen and other necessary life-saving drugs on time. In other words, the pandemic has made us pay dearly for neglecting the health sector for years and punished everyone without showing any leniency or partiality.
Hopefully, the world will not make the same mistake again as the once unbearable situation becomes more bearable. But at the same time, it should not be forgotten that a section of virologists have warned about the recurrence of the virus June next. So the need of the hour is to use the intervening period judiciously to prevent any variant or new disease from becoming a pandemic. To achieve this all nations should take every possible step to arrange proper healthcare facilities for all. Undoubtedly, it’s not an easy task considering the fact that till now many poor nations have not been able to vaccinate their citizens as planned. In this regard, better placed nations should come forward to help concerned countries so that a proper healthcare system is established worldwide. The countries should work together and not leave any loopholes, it is time we unitedly work to make the world safe for future generations. It should be noted that the pandemic may be a matter of the past sooner than later, but Covid-19 will stay for a long time as per general virus characteristics. Thus, any mis-step may bring back horrific memories of the devastating pandemic once again. Taking this aspect into consideration, experts have opined that it’s time to prepare to live with the virus which effectively means that every adult should adopt a healthier lifestyle to minimise risks as much as possible. Similarly, health services in schools should be completely revamped to ensure that every child grows up knowing necessary safety protocols. This is the only way to make this world a healthier place to live in.
