Imphal, June 13 (EMN): Torrential rain in the last two days led to flooding at many places along river banks in Manipur’s hills and valleys while most of the rivers are running above the danger level on Tuesday.
Although there were no human casualties, many localities in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Senapati districts faced flash floods after many rivers including Imphal, Nambul, Kali and Senapati besides tributaries of Barak, Nambul and Thoubal river overflowed at some locations in the afternoon. Rain and flash floods also destroyed standing crops in Kalapahar in Kangpokpi and Thoubal districts, according to reports available here.Villagers in Kalapahar in Kangpokpi district vacated their houses after the flood water entered their habitation area while residents of Sagolband,Uripok and some of the low lying areas faced flash flood. The popular Hanuman Mandir located on the bank of Imphal River was also inundated as the water level of the river rose all of a sudden.
The people living along the Imphal sector of Imphal and Nambul rivers were busy monitoring their riverbanks till the time of this report went to press, as the water level continued to rise.
Manipur’s Social Welfare and Cooperation minister, Nemcha Kipgen visited the affected areas in Kangpokpi district. Nemcha rushed to the flood affected Kalapahar areas and visited the relief camp that was set up at Kalapahar Government High School wherein she distributed various relief materials like rice, dal, pulses and financial assistance of Rs 30000 that was handed over to the chairman of the relief camp.
An emergency medical camp was also set up at the venue. Irrigation and Flood Control department minister Letpao Haokip, parliamentary secretary H Dingo Singh and his team too joined the minister Nemcha’s visit to Kalapahar area.
