[dropcap]P[/dropcap]rime Minister Narendra Modi continues to be on cloud nine. There is no doubt about this status. He enjoys the attentions he receives wherever he lands. There is also not an iota of argument on his enormous charisma, a great departure from his insipid predecessor. He is a towering leader who creates waves in events he involves. Under his leadership the economy of India is also said to be in a healthy form. However, there is a dearth of elements of statesmanship in him. He can be never called a popular Prime Minister in a true sense. He is not going to be a successful Prime Minister either if the affairs in the country is going to be the way it is today under his leadership.Though we may not be able to cite an instance directly to implicate him or attach him in the growing religious intolerance in the country he is very much a strong factor for it. The Hindu nationalists are becoming very vocal ever since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under the former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader became the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014. He rose through the ranks of the ideological parent of the BJP.
We realized today that the Prime Minister would be one of the last ones condemning acts of attacks on religious institutions of the minorities. This indeed is fueling the situation because it sends a clear message to the attackers.
Here, we may not like to read his past but the ugly episodes linked to Mr. Modi often pops up in our mind every time attacks on minorities happen.
According to Family Research Council, a Washington-based Christian conservative outfit, after last years’ Lok Sabha elections religious freedom in India has slipped. The American group also said that discrimination is not happening not just with Christians but with all religious minorities there in India.
Today, India needs a leader who also gives importance in safeguarding our delicate social fabric as much as he/she pays attention to his party, chairs, economy…
Containing the growing energy of saffron forces should be the immediate spade work for any Prime Minister in today’s India if we are to continue with the idea of India.
