Thirty-four students of TM Government Higher Secondary School in Kohima received free spectacles under the NPCB & VI.
DIMAPUR — Thirty-four students of classes 9 to 12 from TM Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, received free spectacles from the Department of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB & VI).
During the distribution programme, Joint Director and Programme Officer of NPCB & VI Dr. Phyantsuthung spoke on the key initiatives under the programme where four core supports, including the prevention of eye cataracts, reading glasses for elders, school-based eye screening, and eye donation, are carried out.
According to an update, he acknowledged the positive response received by the department from various schools towards the eye screening of students. He stated that an autorefractor, a computerised eye testing machine, is used to ensure accurate screening for the provision of free spectacles to beneficiaries.
He also informed the students and teachers that the state has a target of identifying 7,200 beneficiaries during 2026-27. Dr. Phyantsuthung gave necessary instructions to the students for the proper and regular use of the glasses and urged them to take care of their eyes by reducing screen time.
Principal of TM Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, Kelhikha Kenye, thanked the Department of Health and Family Welfare for supporting the students with the much-needed spectacles and creating awareness among students and teachers on maintaining good eye health to prevent visual impairment.
The programme was attended by Vice Principal Khriezosietuo Sohou and Graduate Teacher Liza Zhimomi.
