Dimapur, Nov. 18 (EMN): Deputy Chief Minister Nagaland, Y Patton on Thursday noted Nagaland Police had attained a degree of ‘sustainable maturity and experiences’ in the field of sports.
He added that the time had come for adopting sports policies by identifying sports disciplines best suited for the Nagas so that limited resources could be directed into selected ventures to maximise results.
Patton was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 39th edition of Nagaland Police Duty-cum-sports meets 2021 held at the NAPTC Stadium, Chümoukedima, Dimapur.
Patton opined that in the field of sporting activities, Nagaland Police had already proved their worth at the inter-state, national and international levels.
He said that events like Nagaland Police Duty-cum-sports meet help revive the spirit of oneness, thereby renewing the bond of fraternity among the Police families. He urged that such events ought to be held with more vigour, enthusiasm and with an objective for developing the spirit of healthy competition.
Patton asserted that policing was a challenging and stressful job but with such sporting events, it would improve the physical and mental health and fitness of officers and men alike. He added that police meet encompasses not only games and sports but it exhibits skills in many fields.
The deputy chief minister stated that the police meet was first held in 1967 and since then, Nagaland Police has produced many outstanding sportspersons in various disciplines. He added that it is their earnest hope and endeavour to expose ‘more hidden talents among the jawans’ through such meets and nurture them to their fullest potentialities.
At the event, Patton said that the present government under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was committed to raising one Nagaland Police Sports Battalion in Nagaland Police Complex, Chümoukedima and for which the foundation stone has already been inaugurated.
He also informed that Astroturf football ground within the complex is under construction, with a vision for providing improved infrastructure.
Earlier, Patton took the band salute which was followed by the finals of the drill competition and combined musical presentation by the 15th NAP (IR) Mahila Battalion Pipe band and PTS Brass Band.
The 5th NAP battalion emerged as the winner of the drill competition, the NAP (IR) battalion secured the second position while the 13th IR battalion secured the third position during the finale of the drill competition.
Meanwhile, the 13th NAP (IR) battalion emerged as the overall champions of the sports meet.
A total of 32 teams participated in the week-long sports meets.
