“I like your ‘don’t care a hang’ attitude”, suddenly hit me out of the blue. Did I really have that? Was that what others saw in me? I never knew that to be me at all. Was it good or a bad thing? - my young mind tried to figure. It stopped me on my tracks and made me do a think-back.
As it began to settle in, I kind of began to take hold of what my friend had meant. I had to acknowledge that I did often leave things be, if I couldn’t do much about it. Sometimes I realise now, perhaps that may have held me back from giving the best of my all. I’d mostly believe in ‘going with the flow’.
Yes, I would willingly play my part and not allow a hint of worry tip me over. “I’ll cross the bridge when I get to it” was the attitude I followed, though at that time I didn’t know this adage existed.
To follow through with what I’m conveying today, an experience I must share, however in brief.
I was called on to represent my state at a pageant. I readied myself as best as I could but I wished I could have been more thoroughly equipped. Nevertheless I threw my cares to the wind and decided to enjoy and take pleasure in the participation.
On the day of the show, someone came up to me with a surprised questioning look asking me why I didn’t appear nervous. I said that I was there to take with me the joy of this experience and was not worried about winning or not.
Everything went well and the curtain would have come down with me being quite content having gained many a prize though not the top three positions, when a sudden announcement declared that there had been an error in the person reading out the totals. That corrected, they named me winner of position. My joy knew no bounds.
‘Don’t care a hang’ was what I could term it then because that’s what it was. Today I still do go with the flow, not throwing caution to the wind, however. I stand in the faith that doing my best in what lies before me, the good Lord picks up that which remains beyond my capability even if not immediately, in His time He does.
In appreciation of His word which has armed me I quote –
Matthew 20: Truly I tell you, if you have faith a small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain’ move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible.’’
