Dimapur, June 29 (EMN): When a work is considered as one’s own, it sustains for a longer period; but for a long term out-turn people have to take responsibility, understand that everyone has a role towards maintaining a clean surrounding, realise that negligence is the root cause of the dire environmental situation that we are in, and take some actions. Three women from Namgalong village Burma Camp area in Dimapur rose up to the occasion.
Discouraged with the attitude of public towards waste management, the three women - Ronika Miachieo, Againa and Atoli Swu - took up the great responsibility to mobilise resources and initiate the effort to clear the clogged drain in Burma Camp on Fri. June 29 which was left unattended for nearly two years.
Come monsoon season and Namgalong village is flooded which has become a daily affair for the residents as the only drain which connects from Nagarjan, Civil Hospital, Police colony, Namgalong and flows to Dhansiri river, said Miachieo. But with land encroachment and construction of buildings, it leaves no room for the waste water to flow through the drainage, she pointed out.
Also she asserted “most of us wait for government schemes to start a work so we decided to initiate the clearing of drain clogs not only as a sanitation drive but to create awareness among the community as well”.
This effort by the three of them was supported by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) by providing with DMC workers and machineries. Appreciating the DMC for the assistance provided, Miachieo observed that public must be aware of the waste consequences and land encroachment which can harm the environment and our surroundings for a long term. The team will continue with their effort to clear the drain clogs for another day said Miachieo.
