KOHIMA, OCTOBER 30 : A person who was being detained at the South Police Station in Kohima for alleged involvement in a burglary case has allegedly committed suicide today in police custody.
The deceased has been identified as one Jalaluddin (23) from Karimganj district of Assam. He was reported to be a resident of Midland colony in Kohima town. He was reported to have had a hand in a burglary that took place at AG colony on October 29 at around 1:00 am.
According to the Kohima police, he was arrested and brought to the police station on the same day at 1:00 pm after the burgled house’s owner filed an FIR at South Police Station.
A criminal case was said to have been registered against the accused. Subsequently, he was said to have been kept in the lock-up while routine investigation commenced. Police said that he was found hanging in the toilet of the lock-up when they went to take him to be forwarded to judicial custody. He reportedly tore his shirt and rolled it to hang himself.
Police also said that a faint pulse was detected when they found the accused hanging. It was informed that the police then rushed him to the Naga Hospital in Kohima.
However, the doctor on duty declared him dead-on-arrival, it was informed.
As the case had turned into a custodial death case, the police informed that a judicial inquest was conducted and post mortem was undertaken. It was video-graphed as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India, it was informed.
Digital copies of the recording are said to have been submitted to the district’s deputy commissioner and superintendent of police to be passed on to the state nodal officer of the Nagaland Human Rights Commission for further intimation to the National Human Rights Commission.
The dead body of late Jalauddin was handed over to his brothers, who are also currently residing in Kohima, through the Muslim Council of Kohima, the police added.
