The Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared on 30th March, 2026 in Parliament that "the country has become free from Naxals with the apex body of the Maoists and the central structure almost completely dismantled" as Nagaland Post published the story dated 31st March, 2026. Amit Shah added that "The country will be informed once the entire process is formally completed”, reiterating what I had earlier written that henceforth the Naga political issue may now draw the attention of the Govt. of India (Gol).
To my believe, the Gol cannot betray the Nagas as long as the Nagas, particularly the Naga political negotiators uphold the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position in letter and spirit. And when the political solution is worked out on the basis of these two basic agreements or on one of the agreements in the event of one Naga signatory refusing to accept solution, the Nagas will have hopefully a solution with the political status. Why I believe this is that the Gol cannot afford to betray the Nagas since these two agreements were mutually and officially signed by the two entities and the spadework of negotiations were completed by 31st October, 2019.
Under the given environment, the parties appreciated each other's position whereby the Nagas have agreed to accept what is givable by India. In other words, there was no room left for ambiguity as far as the negotiations are concerned. A solution either based on the two basic agreements or on one agreement will therefore be for all the Nagas in India.
Whereas, in the event of none of the Naga signatories failing to uphold the two basic agreements, there will be no political solution to the delight of the Gol. To my reading of the ongoing trends, in such a situation, the Gol may not allow the Naga political groups to have indefinite ceasefire and indefinite parleys. And in absence of ceasefire and talks, the Naga political factions may be disallowed to possess weapons. Whereas, under such environment, the possible forcible decommission of arms will be without any political status or political package. Because the political status is synonymous with only political solution. Should such become the fate of all the investments so far being made by the Nagas for a solution, it would be the greatest smack of disgrace and a deep dent on the Naga future.
While the Nagas are in the midst of a whirlpool of for or against political solution, the rancid remarks of Mr. Achumbemo (Kikon), MLA and Secretary General of NPF on the Nagaland GB Federation's facilitation activities, while speaking on the Budget in the Assembly, is found to be unethical and malicious. There is no argument as for the appointment of the GBs by the District Administration is concerned. Yet, the GBs never enjoy salary except the symbolic recognition of their service to the people by giving a Red Blanket by Govt. to each GB once a year. The NGBF representatives met the PM of India in New Delhi on 3rd August, 2017, urging him for early political solution. In the absence of a public common platform in Nagaland, the Organising Committee held a successful public rally under the aegis of NGBF on 18th November, 2015 in Dimapur. The NGBF is not a negotiator as much as the present 59 MLAs are not. The NGBF has a sincere and humble concern for the delay of political solution as proved by their unrelenting facilitation activities. Perceiving the NGBF's involvements in facilitation as reducing the status of the political negotiation from PM's level to GBs' level is a total misnomer. Either the very MLA does not have the knowledge of the dichotomy between negotiation and facilitation or the MLA is anti-solution by which the active participations of the NGBF has become his eyesore.
The same MLA asserted that the philosophy and belief of his party is "beyond the creation of Statehood." It lucidly implies that he does not accept the Statehood of Nagaland to be real. Every candidate in the election is legally bound to take compulsory oath of allegiance to the Constitution of India while filing Nomination in the District; the elected Members taking similar oath as Members of the Assembly (till one has not taken oath in the Assembly, that elected member remains MLA designate and not full-fledged Member), and again taking Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy as for the Ministers and Advisors. The membership and the minister ship and the Legislative Assembly and the State Govt. of Nagaland are all because of the Statehood which came into being some 63 years ago.
The very MLA has two options: a) As he prefers something beyond the State of Nagaland, he may relinquish his seat because the very seat he occupies is a constitutional seat by oath which forbids the occupant from talking and acting for cessation from the Union of India. b) As he undermines the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position, which are signed to be within the Union of India, his assertion befits that he relinquishes his Assembly seat and become negotiator and not facilitator since the NLA cannot become the negotiator except facilitation.
The same MLA tried his best to sycophantically fend the leadership and the Govt. by underscoring the deep concerns of the seasoned elderly politicians and bureaucrats over the lethargic and lackadaisical attitude of the State Govt. which has become one of the major road blocks to solution along with NSCN(IM). Let me remind the Status Quo Club that its very sabotage of solution has started bearing the following fruits. When the WC, NNPGs signed the Agreed Position in 2017, we had only 10 factions in total. Within 9 years time, it is now said that we have more than 30 factions. Imagine, the taxation burden on the people of Nagaland. Secondly, had the political solution been brought during the last Interlocutor RN Ravi's time, the recent killing of 4 cadres from Eastern Flank of NSCN(IM) on 29th March, 2026 in Ukhrul district due to internal bickering would never had been there. These negative developments are the handiwork of the Status Quo Club.
When the Secretary General of NPF spoke, it seems the August house said 'Amen'. Thus, the actual colour of the party and the Govt. was exhibited. It goes that the present day Govt. does not want anyone to facilitate for the early political solution based on the two basic agreements, and the Govt. is adamant and open enough to sabotage the political solution so as to increase the sufferings of the common man and to ultimately fuel volatile situation in Nagaland sooner than later.
The Union Home Minister in the same speech in Parliament "accused the Congress of doing nothing to end the long spell of violence perpetrated by the ultras," alleging Rahul Gandhi to be sympathetic with Maoists sympathisers and blaming the late PM Indira Gandhi for having availed the help of Maoists in 1970s. I am no more a Congressman, and I have no comment on those allegations. Why I quoted these allegations of the Home Minister is to remind the Gol that what Congress leaders and Congress Govt. allegedly did in the past, exactly the PDA Govt. in which BJP is a major partner has been doing all these years. When the BJP, the erstwhile NDPP and NSCN(IM) jointly sought the removal of RN Ravi, Governor and Interlocutor, he was abruptly removed. As the Congress failed to handle the Maoists as required, the BJP is yet to fulfill the promise that the Naga political issue would be resolved within 18 months’ time, and that 2018 Assembly election was for solution as promised by BJP leader Ram Madhav.
What Congress had allegedly done, the same yardstick is being used by the Gol too in respect of the
Naga political issue. What is needed is for the Gol to walk the talk.
