Dimapur, Oct. 17 (EMN): A three-day interactive session on various topics ranging from leadership values to learning systems as well as the intricacies involved in applying for overseas education concluded on October 17 at Tetso College with Dr. Mego Haralu as the resource person at the college premises in Sovima, Dimapur.
As part of the college’s degree of thought (DOT) talks lecture series, Dr. Haralu, an education consultant with Quantum Education Network, held three sessions namely ‘Leadership theory and organisation management,’ ‘Learning outcomes on the online learning platform and earning an online degree from US institutions,’ and ‘The steps for studying abroad – scholarships, academic disciplines, work-study, application procedures and immigration pathways for bachelor, master and doctorate studies.’
Students, HODs and faculty of the college attended the programme.
On the first day, Dr. Haralu emphasised on the qualities of being an able leader, which can be achieved by establishing a symbiotic relationship between leaders and followers. According to him, a leader cannot be a leader without followers and followers need each other to maintain a relationship. He, however, cautioned that power needs to be utilised by those people who have the moral aptitude to handle it because power has the ability to corrupt. For this, he called upon the need for experienced people ‘at the helm to steer the ship.’
Also speaking on the occasion, former dean of International Education at Campbellsville University – Kentucky, USA, maintained that, “We must find collaborative ways to tackle any issue rather than use conflict - for this institutional goals are important.”
The educator shared that managers at the top level need to be mindful of company/ institutional needs and work on ways to improve productivity. He added that one might also have to deal with ethical and social responsibility issues as these factors come into play often.
On the second day, Dr. Haralu spoke on the topic ‘Learning management systems (LMS), which are software applications for e-learning and to supplement classroom courses. LMS is relevant to address the needs of the changing times in modern day education and could be achieved by incorporating collaboration tools such as forums, chat rooms, e-mail notifications, and various applications, he said.
While weighing the pros and cons of both online and traditional learning, he was of the opinion that unless learning management systems are well developed and well in place, it could cause hindrances to the learning process.
The final session of the lecture series witnessed the resource speaker enlightening the students on the vast array of courses available in institutions across the globe such as humanities, business administration, sports management, mass communication, criminal justice, music, fine arts and theological studies. He also divulged information regarding documents and paperwork needed to apply for those institutions.
At the end of the session, vice principal of Tetso College Hewasa Lorin expressed gratitude to the resource speaker for sharing meaningful insights and hoped that it would have a bearing on the students as and when they venture abroad for further studies.
Meanwhile, Dr. Haralu also expressed willingness to send some of the college’s students to the US on an overseas summer tour in the month of July next year.
