KOHIMA, SEPT 1 : In recognition of their work in the field of education, 25 teachers in Kohima district were awarded with the Kohima District Teachers’ Award for 2016, during a ceremony at the DPDB in Kohima town on Thursday.
17 teachers from government schools and eight teachers from private schools were awarded with a citation and cash award each.
The deputy commissioner of Kohima district, Rovilatuo Mor, was the guest of honour for the event.
Congratulating the teachers, Mor said that teaching being a noble service, every teacher was expected to live up to expectation. Every teacher must prove their sincerity and service in education to prove the nobility of the profession, he said.
Prior to his joining the government Mor said he was a teacher. He asserted that material benefits ‘do not matter to a teacher, but emotional satisfaction and contentment of rendering our best services in enlightening the ignorant with knowledge and shaping a child into a discipline student is the real reward’.
Encouraging the teachers, he said that the award was a ‘token of appreciation’ for their service; he urged them to endeavour to earn the respect of the people and the state ‘as well as at the national level.’
‘A sincere and dedicated teacher is always rewarded in the form of a successful life, which is also passed down to the children,’ he added. .
Short speeches were also delivered by sub-division education officers (SDEOs) Rokovolhoulie Nagi, Chiephobozou, Visayieca, and Orenponi.
In their speeches, the officers encouraged the teachers to ‘have good character,’ stating that the growth and development of the nation depends on the services of the teachers towards shaping students to live in the right direction.
‘Good character is not a talent or a gift. It is a choice,’ said SDEO Orenponi. She said that the teachers had earned the award by the merit of sincerity and commitment to their profession.
