Dimapur, August 19 (EMN): Nagaland Education Association (NEA) organised a special lecture on ‘constructivism as an approach to teaching learning’ for teacher educators and B.Ed students of Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE), Kohima, URA College of Teacher Education, Kohima and Sazolie College of Teacher Education, Kohima.
During the programme, the association promoted various methods and skills of teaching. Teachers were encouraged to use continuous and comprehensive evaluation as a culture of teaching. They are also advised to conduct more literary programmes to allow the children to construct their own views and opinions like debating, extempore speech, essay writing, role play, drama, painting, drawing, music, dance, silent meditation, interaction, counselling.
The Special lecture also emphasised the importance of team teaching, collaboration in teaching and learning, group work and thematic approach to teaching.
A brief discussion was also held on how to develop a lesson plan based on 5 Es viz: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate.
The resource persons for the programme were Dr. Zavise Rume, associate professor of SCERT and Sanjay Sinha, senior lecturer, DIET, Pfutsero.
In a press realease, NEA president, Dr. Zavise Rume, said the idea of constructivism has greatly influenced the modern education system specially the Indian education system. The National Curriculum Framework 2005 has defined the child as the natural constructor of Knowledge. It emphasised that modern teachers lost faith in the child and that is the reason why teachers teach everything without giving opportunities for children to work to discover themselves.
The National Curriculum for School Education 2000 has recognised the child as the constructor of knowledge. The Draft National Policy on Education 2016 while recognising the child as the expert learner, emphasised that the school education must promote critical thinking, concentration, reasoning rather than a mere memorization of facts and figures.
Learner centered classroom seminar: Modern Institute of Teacher Education Kohima has successfully organised a One Day Seminar on “Building a learner centered classroom through emotional intelligence” with Dr. Rukulü Kezo, assistant professor, Department of English, Modern College Kohima as resource person.
The seminar focuses on the learner centered classroom which is the need of the hour. Dr. Kezo talked about the shifts of learning in a learner from literacy skills to social skills. She also emphasised on the constructivist approach of learning and explore on the learner idea through multiple activities. She talks about creating a learner friendly class room by integrating emotional intelligence into the learning environment.
The seminar was chaired Daikho Manehrii, assistant professor of MITE while welcomed address was delivered by H L Gangte, vice-principal of MITE. The seminar concluded with a discussion hour.
