Tocklai Tea Research Institute is the ‘oldest tea institute’ in the world, updates on Sunday. Dr. Barooah was stated to have expressed happiness at the visit of the department’s officers and said that tea growers from Nagaland do not come to visit the Institute, “else we will be the happiest to assist,” according to a press release.
“Citing a research, he also said that after two decades the present tea cultivation area would no more be favourable and the tea growing activity was likely to move towards northeast region where the climate is favourable.”
Further, the press release stated, he said that some tea samples sent from Nagaland to the Institute were “good enough falling under the league of global tea.” He urged tea growers in Nagaland to create market within their state.
Earlier during the day, the officers of the Land Resources department held meeting with the officials there.
The secretary of the Land Resources department, Y. Kikheto Sema, was said to have appealed to the board for assistance and technical guidance for tea growers in the state.
“He pointed out that most of the tea growers in Nagaland were not getting any kind of assistance from the TBI. As the nodal department for tea cultivation in the state, Kikheto said, the department was trying to reach out to the farmers and link them with competent authorities that could guide the tea growers on technical aspects as well as any other kind of assistance,” the press release stated.
