KOHIMA, MAY 16 : In a delayed report received here, a private taxi driver from Meriema village allegedly molested, manhandled and attempted to rape a passenger, a 22-year-old woman below IG Stadium on May 12. The victim was reportedly travelling from Meriema to Kohima when the incident took place.
The woman from DC Residence colony was said to have been taken towards the circular road from Meriema to New Secretariat Kohima site instead of the highway towards IG Stadium Kohima.
According to Kohima police, the accused reportedly stopped the car enroute to Secretariat road and allegedly molested and manhandled the woman passenger. However, the victim managed to escape and went straight to the police to report the incident.
Police tracked down the accused, 30-year-old Neitsu of Meriema village, on the same day at his village while he was trying to conceal the car (private taxi). The accused, a married man, is said to have confessed to his action to the police and he has been remanded to judicial custody.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Rongmei Women Union Kohima (RWUK) has strongly condemned the act of “molestation, attempted rape and murder” of a girl student of Rongmei tribe on May 12 allegedly by one Neitsu of Meriema.
In a release today, RWUK president Gaisinmei Jennifer Kamei and public secretary Gracy Gonmei stated that the incident has deeply traumatized the victim and greatly affected her physical and mental health, creating a fear psychosis that may affect for the rest of her life. The union stated that the accused has no right to destroy someone’s life, and such person should be dealt with severely.
The organization demanded the concerned law enforcing agencies and authorities to render befitting punishment to the accused and not to bail out under any circumstances. “When a person of his nature walks free, then the lives of girls are at greater risks of such crimes being committed again or much worse in the future.”
