Ukhrul, Dec.20: The Tangkhul Naga community held a public meeting on Tuesday in Ukhrul and termed ‘unfortunate’ and ‘communal’ the Sunday evening incident that saw more than 20 vehicles torched along with personal belongings of passengers and over 30 vehicles vandalised along the Imphal-Ukhrul road.
The public meeting, attended by over 7000, vehemently condemned the act and the ‘inability’ of the state’s security forces to stop the outrage.
On Sunday last evening, over 50 vehicles that were travelling with security to Ukhrul were attacked by a rampaging mob near Khurai under Imphal East District. Most of the travellers, including children and elderly people, were on their way home for Christmas. In the malee, many were reportedly injured.
Although the incident happened in front of the state’s security personnel, no attempt to thwart the rampage was allegedly made. So far no arrest has been made.
Today’s public meeting also condemned what was alleged as the ‘biased attitude’ of the Manipur state government. The meeting vehemently decided to oppose the creation of seven new districts, the crux of the current turmoil in Manipur.
The meeting decided to approach the central government for imposition of President’s Rule in the state.
