Dimapur, June 17 (EMN): The Kohima Sumi Totimi Hoho, in association with the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) organized a legal awareness seminar on June 16 at the auditorium of Mt. Olive College in Kohima with about 80 women participants.
In her introductory note, Kakheli Jakhalu, member of the NSCW said that all the participants of the seminar are leaders in their own respective areas and hence, the responsibility of looking after the welfare of the people is mandated upon them all.
Informing that the NSCW has been constituted to look after the rights of the women, she encouraged the womenfolk to approach the commission with their grievances.
Speaking as the resource person on the topic “Know Your Rights: Challenges faced by the female gender”, advocate of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench, Joshua Sheqi, stressed on legislations and efforts to close the gender inequity. He shared the legal rights such as right to marriage, divorce and inheritance, protection of women from domestic violence.
Sheqi also enlightened the participants on the issues of human trafficking in India and Prohibition of Child Labour. He emphasised on the rules that women should be aware of.
Stating that male centric Naga society is the basis for the growth in gender gap, he said that education is the best tool to bridge the gap.
