Take requisite measures to restore peace–Churachandpur MLAs
Churachandpur district in Manipur have urged the state government to take up all requisite measures for restoration of peace and
harmony apart from appealing “to uphold peace and harmony.”
IMPHAL — Legislators
of violent-hit Churachandpur district in Manipur have urged the state
government to take up all requisite measures for restoration of peace and
harmony apart from appealing “to uphold peace and harmony.”
“We earnestly appeal to everyone in our community to uphold
peace and harmony and solve any issues without giving a communal colour in
order to build a cohesive, united and strong community,” says the six MLAs of
Churachandpur district in a joint appeal on Wednesday.
“Finally, we urge the state government particularly the
district administration to take up all requisite measures for restoration of
peace and harmony in the district on topmost priority. We will do everything we
can to achieve this goal,” it added.
The six MLAs representing Churachandpur district are
Ngursanglur Sanate of Tipaimukh assembly constituency, Letzamang Haokip of
Henglep constituency, Paolienlal Haokip of Saikot constituency, Chinlungthang
of Singngat, LM Khaute of Churachandpur and Vungzagin Valte of Thanlon.
The joint appeal by six MLAs came out after one person was
killed as violence between the Hmar and Zomi communities escalated late on
Tuesday night in Churachandpur district and prompted an indefinite emergency
shutdown on Wednesday.
According to people familiar with the matter, the person
identified as Lalropui Pakhuongte (52) was allegedly killed during the course
of violence triggered after a group of Hmars opposed a Zomi group’s hoisting of
their community flag. A day earlier, a Zomi group allegedly assaulted a leader
of a Hmar organisation and triggered fresh tensions.
Stating that the emergency shutdown has become necessary in
the wake of the volatile situation in Churachandpur, a Kuki-Zo dominated area,
the Zomi Students’ Federation, in a press release on Wednesday said, “It is
hereby informed that all normal activities shall remain suspended. Schools and
colleges shall remain closed. All shops and business establishments shall
remain closed as well. We further advise all people to remain in their homes.”
“This emergency shutdown shall remain in place until the
situation improves,” the release issued by the information and publicity wing
of ZSF said.
Meanwhile, a joint appeal (cum agreement) for communal
harmony and peace was issued with 12 signatories representing bodies of
different communities including Hmar Inpui and Zomi Council on Wednesday with a
pledge to work towards non-violence, communal harmony and peaceful
co-existence.
"This agreement signifies our collective commitment to
restoring peace, healing wounds and building a future where all communities of
Churachandpur can co-exist with dignity and mutual respect." the joint
appeal said.
All operations at Churachandpur District Hospital were
cancelled on Wednesday due to lack of Operation Theatre staff and technicians.
The hospital wards and OPDs also suffer the same, according to hospital
authority.
On Tuesday, the district magistrate of Churachandpur
informed that the district administration is taking all necessary measures to
restore law and order.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of every citizen
and will hold accountable anyone found violating the law,” the public appeal
stated.
