Dimapur, July 15 (EMN): In the aftermath of the killing of a ‘Naga migrant’ in Chennai, the Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai (NCFC) and the Naga Students' Union Chennai (NSUC) have asked the state government and civil societies to address the ‘unprecedented migration of uneducated and unskilled people from Nagaland.’
A joint statement from the two organisations on Monday stated five ‘migrant workers’ from Nagaland has died this year in Chennai alone. “Most of the deceased are young people, in their twenties. This is an alarming call to Nagaland government, tribal unions, churches and different NGOs based in Nagaland.”
Many of them do not register with the NCFC and the NSUC, it stated. They are contacted only in times of emergency or tragedy, it added.
“This is an urgent appeal to the people in Nagaland whose children, wards, relatives, villagers, etc. are staying in Chennai that they must register immediately with these two organisations,” it stated.
Those migrating for works should be provided proper information about the job in the cities, the living conditions and the Naga organisations based in various cities, it stated. “Moreover, the agents/relatives/friends who are taking Nagas to different cities should be properly verified by the parents.”
