Dimapur, August 24 (EMN): Three-time champion, Nagaland football team has once again delivered its intent as a serious contender for the ongoing Subroto Cup for under-14 boys by raiding its first two opponents for a staggering 31 goals.
To add to this jaw-dropping tally of goals plundered inside mere 180 minutes, the team from Nagaland is yet to concede a single goal. This year’s edition of Subroto cup – the premier youth football tournament in the country – is being held at New Delhi. It started on August 22 and will end on September 26 next.
In the first match on August 23, the team from Nagaland ransacked Kasiga school from Dehradun – considered the best, if not the best, boarding school in the country – for 21 goals. To complement the Nagaland attack, its defence did not let in a single goal – conspiring to conjure a frightening score-line of 21-0.
Mughahuto Chishi led the raid for Nagaland with 7 goals followed by Tongtinlen Khongsai, who scored 6 goals. Eshong Konyak hit 3 goals, and Viye Lohe registered 2. The trio of Hetoka Chophy, Lengoulen Changsan and Oka Zhimo scored one each, to complete the score-line.
In the second match played today, Nagaland spanked Indian Air Force School by a margin of 10-0. As was the case in the first match, Mughahuto Chishi led the rout even in the second, by scoring 6 goals.
Oka Zhimo hit a double, while Tongtinlen Khongsai and Viye Lohe scored one each to complete the drubbing.
Coach Mughato Sumi informed Eastern Mirror that Nagaland would be facing Kerala next on Saturday. Akihito Zhimo is the manger of the team.
According to Sumi, until early August, the team was not even sure of competing in the tournament because of financial problems. Until August 22, the team had no confirmation of their trip to Delhi even as the tournament was scheduled to start from August 23.
It was only through the intervention of the parliamentary secretary concerned, according to Sumi, that the team could participate. He shared that the parliamentary secretary had arranged the players to fly in to Delhi, after learning that their train tickets have been missed out.
