Yimchunger Students’ Union Kohima (YSUK) celebrated its 25 years anniversary on July 11 at the State Academy Hall, Kohima, on the theme ‘A leap to perfection’.
Minister for Roads & Bridges (PWD), Y Vikheho Swu, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, lauded the union on completion of 25 years. While complimenting the far-sighted vision of the founding members of YSUK, he asserted that jubilee is a time of reflection and called upon the members of the union to introspect and evaluate their achievements as well as failures in order to prepare for a better future.The minister expressed concern over the formation of too many unions and associations in the state and underscored that there is an urgent need to redesign the functions of such organizations. To the YSUK, he asked the student leaders to focus education and promoting students’ career. Swu also called upon the students to prioritize their role and limit their involvement in social activities.
Also voicing strongly against the prevalent attitude of depending too much on others, the minister opined that the Naga society should do away with this attitude and show more accountability.
Special guest of the occasion, Parliamentary Secretary for Economics & Statistics and Municipal Affairs, R Tohanba, exhorted the students on the importance of upholding cultural and moral values.
He urged upon the students to prioritize on their studies and curricular activities to be able to compete with others in the modern competitive world. He said there are no shortcuts to success and said students should discipline themselves in order to become successful in their careers and bring laurels to the community.
YSUK president, A Khiungmong Yim, in his address, expressed gratitude to the pioneers of the union.
YSUK founding president, A Akum, and the president of Eastern Naga Students’ Union, Kohima, also delivered short speeches.
