The students’ community in Nagaland has been encouraged by a legislator to reach out to people living in the border areas as a movement to work for the Naga people’s community which remains divided.
Minister Rural Development CL John urged students to work united with a common vision for the Naga people’s divided society, not only confining to the people of the state but also reach out to those scattered along the border areas.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 17th Biennial general conference of All Nagaland College Students’ Union at IG Stadium, Kohima also said that Nagas promised to send 10,000 missionaries to the world should not only confined to the theologians but as politicians and students all should work as Christian missionary in their respective fields assigned to them.
CL John also stressed on the need for the people of state to put into practice work culture, further stressing the one should earn his livelihood through one’s own sweat and hard work.
Also commenting on the present education system, which is based only on theoretical and bookish knowledge, he maintained that in today’s time the students need to go for practical education in order to excel in life. He wished the students in their future endeavors, and hope that they would contribute something worthy for the betterment and uplift of the society.Lalthara, IAS (Retd), Advisor and senior Principal Secretary to Chief Minister speaking as the guest of honor said as leaders of today and tomorrow, said the responsibilities lies on the students to excel beyond boundaries.
He asserted that the formula to excel is to implement and put in practice the motto ‘No pain, no gain’ which he said is the eternal truth for human survival in the world dictated by God, wherein he also stressed on the need of earning one’s bread through one’s own brow.
He also advised the students not to make their body and mind lazy, but to exercise their body and mind regularly lest it becomes weak. He asked them to apply the principle in everything that they do so that they excel in life.
Calling the youth as the change agent, he urged them to take the lead to change the society for prosperity, progress and development. He also asked them to take advantage of the mass media, a powerful instrument to bring change to the society, though he also warned of its destructive nature too.
Therefore, he advised them to use it wisely and to their advantage, while also asking them to preserve our (Naga) unique identity and culture. Also stating his concern on the influx of illegal immigrants into the state, Lalthara said the effective prescription to stop IBIs is to develop work culture and change our attitude towards work by getting the work done by ourselves.
He cautioned that if the people don’t develop the work culture and if we can’t do our work, he said the immigration problem can never be solved and said the day is not far when we will be outnumbered by these people.
He also urged the students to be environmental conscious, which has become a real threat to our planet. The students were also asked to take the lead in conservation of plants and animals, and to avoid all activities that contribute to pollution.
Meanwhile the union has elected its new team of office bearers for the term 2015-2017 led by Zhoku Thuluo as the president and Benjongakum Longchar as the general secretary.
Special numbers were also presented by Sentienla, Winner of Hornbill Kids Carnival 2013 and Menolhousie Tsükrü. The programme was chaired by Medo Chirhah, member organizing committee and vote of thanks proposed by Ejanthung Ngullie, member organizing committee.
