Dimapur, Oct 18 (EMN): Commemorating the week-long programme on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) – Save the girl child; educate her, Kohima and Phek districts observed a one-day event on the occasion of International Day of Girl Child on the theme “The power of the adolescent girl: Vision 2030,” wherein students pledged to make the vision a reality.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) has been functioning in 161 districts in India, including Longleng of Nagaland. Its goal is to celebrate the girl child and enable her education with an objective to prevent gender biased sex selective elimination, to ensure her survival, protection, education and participation into the society.
This year, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Government of India, directed all the gender critical districts to observe the BBBP week on the theme “Daughters of New India” with a series of activities such as door to door campaign, awareness programme and other related activities.
The State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW), which is the project management unit for BBBP, and the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the district administration of Longleng celebrated the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Week from October 9 - 14.

As the only gender critical district in the State, district administration of Longleng observed the week-long programme with various activities.
Speaking on All India Radio (AIR), Director of Social Welfare, Merangtsungba Aier, relayed his hope that the event will provide platform to raise issues, concerns and challenges faced by girls.
Bayavü High School, Kohima, commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child, held an oath-taking service with the pledge to make the Girl Child Day dream based on this year’s theme “The power of the adolescent girl: Vision 2030” a reality.
In observance of BBBP week, Bano Vinito, chairperson of NSSWB, and Daisy Mezhür, Mission Director of SRCW, launched the mascot of the Nagaland Adolescent Girls’ Club (NAGC), who are “the little champions for girl child education” under BBBP Nagaland.
In Phek district altogether 10 villages under Village Convergence and Felicitation Service (VCFS), Sekrüzu Block, celebrated the occasion by planting tree saplings dedicated to the girl child, where the children themselves volunteered to plant the trees.
