Kohima, Aug. 20 (EMN): Advocate of Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, Zhekheli Zhimomi, stated that many student union leaders at present are 'enticed’ by money and lead their associations in a ‘factional manner’.
She stated this while addressing the students as the guest speaker during the 30th fresher’s day of Mount Olive College Kohima (MOCK) on Saturday. Zhimomi reiterated that the way many lead their unions was "misleading" because of selfish motives.
"You are our tomorrow," she said, adding that students should embrace the system at the level of the government, politically, socially and economically with honesty while asserting that there is "rampant corruption" in the state.
She expressed sadness to note that the present younger generation of becoming "uncultured" and disrespectful to parents, elders or teachers. Despite being in uniforms, she cited how it has become a common sight to see students misbehaving even in public domain.
While many youth are being carried away by the ill-effects of social media and lifestyle of other countries, Zhimoni cautioned that unless young people go back to their "roots and originality," they would lose their culture and tradition.
"We have had enough intellectual talks on social media," she said.
Reminding students not to indulge in drugs, alcohol and other abusive substances, Zhimomi asked students to set their goals and put in effort.
She further urged the young boys and girls of the college to conduct themselves properly by imbibing morality and traditional values while pursuing their studies so that they may uplift the name of their institute.
Amugha Shohe and Menguzenuo Tsükrü, both from BA 1st semester, were declared Mr and Miss Olivian 2022 respectively.
It was informed that about 200 freshers including students from both class 11 and BA 1st semester have been enrolled for the academic year 2022.
During the occasion, one student was awarded certificate of excellence and six students received certificate of merit for successfully passing out with flying colours during the undergraduate examination 2022 conducted by Nagaland University.
Expressing happiness that the students brought laurels to the college, Swedezhono Tsükrü, principal of MOCK, informed that Preeti Rai was awarded free scholarship for her degree course under the meritorious student scheme having passed her HSSLC examination from Mt. Olive College in 1st division with distinction in three subjects.
In the recently declared result of Undergraduate Examination 2022 conducted by Nagaland University, Rai, a student of BA Education Honours, scored CGPA 6.80 with distinction in three subjects again.
From class representative to being elected as the general secretary of MOCK in her final year, Tsükrü said Rai student exhibited her excellent leadership traits throughout her tenure. In recognition of her outstanding performances, she apprised that Rai was awarded with a certificate of excellence.
