Mokokchung, Aug. 20: Mokokchung Law College Corpus Committee, a group under the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) to generate funds to run the lone Law College in Mokokchung District, handed over monetary assistance to the college’s principal in the presence of AKM official and others at its college library on Aug. 20 to aid the salaries of the staff and teaching faculty of the college.
The Mokokchung Law College established in 1981 through a resolution adopted by the AKM during its Golden Jubilee Celebration at Longkhum village on 1979. The college was established after collecting monetary contribution from each household in the Ao society. However, the lone law institute in the district had been struggling to survive because of fund constraints for the past decades.
The college has been surviving from the tuition fees and voluntary teachers who took the responsibility to teach students with nominal honorarium and contributions from well-wishers.
Taking into account the hardships being faced by the college, the AKM explored different ways and means to ameliorate the condition of the only law institute in the district. It even submitted different proposals to the government to take over the college and make it into a government institution; however, it has not materialised till now.
Nevertheless, AKM took another initiative and organised '‘We Care IV’, charity concert in aid of Mokokchung Law College in Dec. 2016 with the objective of generating a targeted sum of Rs.10 lakhs which will go towards the establishment of a Mokokchung Law College Corpus Fund. The initiative has finally borne fruit.
Tiatoshi, the convener of the Mokokchung Law College Corpus Committee, while handing over the hard cash in an envelope to the college principal, informed that the committee has been be providing monetary assistance every month generated from the corpus seed money starting from July this year onwards.
While accepting the monetary assistance, the college Principal, Temjenkaba appreciated the efforts of the AKM and the Corpus Committee for their great initiative. He also urged the governing body of the college to revamp the system and the working method of the institute to bring the law institute to the forefront of academic excellence.
The AKM Information Secretary, Nekmi Longkumer, while speaking at the small function, expressed AKM's belief that the institution will bring laurels to the Nagas as envisioned by the founding members of the college. urged the Committee members and teaching faculty to contribute towards making the college into a reputed law institution that produces lawyers who protect and defend the rights of the citizen as enshrined in the constitution.
It is to be mentioned that Mokokchung Law College, offering LLB course, is presently being managed by a governing body with the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung as the chairman and the principal of the college as member secretary.
