DIMAPUR — A pellet shattering a residential window has prompted calls for tighter monitoring of air rifles and pellet guns in Dimapur, with the Dimapur Urban Chairman Federation (DUCCF) warning that casual firing in neighbourhoods could put residents at risk.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the federation stated that the recent incident highlighted the potential danger of discharging projectile weapons in densely populated residential areas. No one was injured in the incident, but the pellet reportedly struck near an occupied living space.

According to the DUCCF, local community leaders and residents had raised concerns over the alleged random discharge of air rifles and pellet guns in residential neighbourhoods, citing risks to public safety and private property.

“Urban residential zones are not target ranges,” the federation maintained, warning that firing projectiles near homes, children and vehicles could result in serious injury.

While air rifles and air pistols are commonly used for recreational shooting or pest control, the DUCCF cautioned that their use in residential areas could cause injuries, particularly to the eyes, as well as damage to property.

The federation urged residents and colony councils to maintain vigilance and report incidents involving the discharge of air guns, air rifles or similar weapons within residential areas.

It also called on authorities to review gun licences and air-weapon use, and urged colony councils to liaise with law enforcement agencies on licensing compliance and applicable restrictions.

According to DUCCF, neighbourhood councils are planning to strengthen community monitoring and establish reporting mechanisms for incidents involving unauthorised shooting or the brandishing of air weapons.
