Dimapur, September 18 : The Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) celebrated World Bamboo Day with various activities on September 18 in Dimapur. The event was conducted “with the objective of bringing the potential of bamboo to a more elevated exposure, to protect natural resources and the environment, to ensure sustainable utilization, to promote new cultivation of bamboo for new industries in regions around the world, as well as promote traditional uses locally for community economic development,” the agency stated in a media handout on Sunday.
This year’s celebration “put special emphasis on acknowledging bamboo farmers, artisans, craftsmen and bamboo self-help groups in the state,” the press release stated.
The celebration was held at the Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre at 6th Mile (Sovima) in Dimapur, it was informed.
People from various walks of life including technocrats, farmers, entrepreneurs and artisans attended the programme. The program also saw musical performances by students of the Margaret Shishak School of Music, Patkai Christian College, among other events. The programme also saw a special performance by Moa and Aren of local rock band Abiogenesis. They played their ingeniously developed bamboo musical instruments called the ‘Bamhum’ and ‘Tikzik’, the agency said.
Also, various awards were given to the best VBDC, best performing self-help group, most promising entrepreneur, artisan and the most progressive farmer of the year.
The chief guest of the event was Naiba Konyak, advisor to the NBDA. In his speech, Konyak ‘stressed on the need to be more progressive in words and action, and requested special prayer from all quarters for the agency in implementing its activities,’ the press release explained.
