DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 5: To be a good teacher in a State like Nagaland is challenging where education is not faring well as per reports with school dropouts in primary school among the highest in the country and quality education continuing to be elusive, said Alongla P Aier, Professor of Oriental Theological Seminary.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the combined Teachers’ Day celebration at Covenant Hall of Christian Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, on Monday, she said the unending problem of proxy teachers, absentee teachers adds to the menace of imparting quality education.
However, she urged the teachers to take their calling seriously by going extra miles to improve the situation. She also reminded the teachers that they are in the process of making a generation and if ever Nagaland needs dedicated, skilled teachers, it is time to give the children the best as they deserve- the best services of the teachers.
Quoting top researchers of education, Alongla P Aier remarked that the single most important factor that influences learning is the life and personality of a teacher.‘Young lives are impressed and changed far more by truths; Teachers are role models that young people look up to. It is impossible not to influence the students we teach positively or negatively and we make an impact upon their lives for better or worse,’ conveyed Aier.
A teacher must focus on the teaching-learning process as the so called ‘banking method’ is outdated underlined Aier. This approach, according to her, sees the student as an empty vessel and the teacher’s job is to fill in with as much as knowledge where the student’s opinions are not considered important.
She called upon the teacher to question themselves why they teach and also to ponder if they are really committed to the profession despite all the challenges. Being clear of this sense of commitment, she said they will not only create job satisfaction but a sense of accomplishment.
On the occasion, 30 teachers of Dimapur district were awarded for their contribution toward teaching which was presented by R Amongla Jamir, Deputy District Education Officer Dimapur.
