The government of Nagaland has decided to open two more companies of State Disaster Response Force for the state. Each of the eleven districts will be allocated 30 personnel to comprise the disaster response team for the area. This was disclosed by an official of the Civil Defense establishment on Thursday during a disaster management program.
To prepare students meet emergencies especially during disasters, the department of Civil Defense and Home Guards of Mokokchung district on Thursday conducted mock drills and demonstration about disaster response for the student of Senkalemba government middle school in Arkong ward in the town. As part of the event, mock drills, an exhibition of search-and-rescue tools and accessories, and a side event, a painting competition was conducted during the program. The painting competition was conducted under the theme ‘disaster management’ for school students in the premise of the institution on March 19.
Deputy Controller of Civil Defense & District Commandant of the Home Guards Mokokchung, Watilemba, interacted with media persons after the event. He disclosed that the objective behind organizing the program was to sensitize students ‘through practical means, since people are reluctant and ignoring to know such awareness on natural disaster and man-made disasters.’
Watilemba said that the state government has decided to open two companies of State Disaster Response Force in Nagaland. Each district would be allotted 30 personnel to comprise the force, he said. He added that the training course for the SDRF personnel was likely to start in the coming months this year.
The official has urged the public the public, ‘smokers, panic party other such parties’ to exercise caution while using fire as the windy season has begun and fire accidents become more likely.
The winners of the day’s painting competition were declared on Thursday. The first prize went to Bendangnaro of class-5 while the second prize was bagged by Y. Imchilila, class-7.
The organizers have informed that a similar program would be conducted in another school tomorrow.
Till date Mokokchung district has witnessed two major natural calamities: in 2004 flash flood hit Tuli and a landslide hit at Mokokchung town.
