Kohima, May 8 (EMN): Along with the rest of the world, Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch, celebrated the World Red Cross Day at the conference hall of Red Cross Complex, Kohima, Monday on the theme “Less known Red Cross stories.”
The chief guest and Director General of Police, LL Doungel, speaking at the occasion, said adopting the principles of Red Cross Society could helped restore peace and harmony in the society which is characterised by differences, mostly arising out of the differences in the communities.
In the absence of treaties such as Geneva Convention, he said we can engage or relate with each other. He lauded the Moatsu festival saying it was a beautiful initiative saying, “Why didn’t we think many years ago. It’s not late but it is a good beginning.”
“This time it is Angami delegates, so it is Moatsu of two tribes. Why not have Moatsu of 16 tribes or Sukhrunyi of 16 tribes or even more,” Doungel emphasised.
He also stated that respect for human rights is needed in enable rule of law prevail in a just society. For this, we have to understand that the respect for human rights is vital otherwise we will be failing in recognising the real need to remove conflict in the society, he said.
As a part of the initiative, he mentioned that human rights were taught as a subject for trainees, constable, SI cadets and also holds periodic debates on human rights in different levels.
He has sought partnership to promote peace and humanity between the people and the police department.
On Red Cross Day, he said the philanthropic work should be locally implemented so that it will have relevance for all of us.
General Secretary of IRCSN Dr. Kepelhusie Terhuja, in his welcome address, mentioned that World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of IRC and Red Crescent Movement. It is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. He created the community after witnessing the deep suffering of thousands of wounded soldiers and the lack of medical services.
Terhuja also said Nagaland Red Cross staff members and volunteers have successfully trained about four hundred First Medical Responders (FMR) in Nagaland. He maintained that the Red Cross Society has 7 set of principles namely Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Unity, Universality and Volunteer Services. He also acknowledged the importance of youth in bringing about positive change in the society.
Students of Minister’s Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School, Rev. Dr. Neiliezhu Usou Memorial School and Little Flower Higher Secondary School presented songs. The programme was chaired by TCK Abeni and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by member Dr. Neiphi Kire.

Dimapur observed the world Red Cross Day at Visually Impaired School, Circular Road, near Metro Hospital, with the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome as the chief guest.
The DC, in his brief speech, exhorted the Red Cross Society Dimapur to compete quietly without attracting attention of the media.
Kesonyu said the society may not be in a good position to help the school at the moment but assured that the Red Cross Society will always be there for them to support.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Vikato also spoke on the occasion where he told the visually impaired children to have faith in God and encouraged them not to lose hope but keep on praying.
Joseph Lemtur, president of Dimapur District Citizen Forum, saluted the members and the leaders for their good works towards the differently-abled persons in the State.
Chandu Agarwal, chairman of Indian Red Cross Society Dimapur division delivered the key note by explaining the 7 fundamental principles of Red Cross Society. He said the Society is working hard to help the people who are in need for humanitarian service.

Wokha observed the World Red Cross Day with ADC, Wokha, K Thavaseelan as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Thavaseelan said unlike other organisation/ societies, the fundamental principles of the Red Cross society is based on four mean core areas- promoting humanitarian principles and values, disaster response, disaster preparedness and health and care in the community. He said Red Cross promotes humanitarian values which encourages respect for other human beings and a willingness to work together to find solution to problems, adding the movement aims to influence the behaviour of all the people.
Honorary Secretary IRCS Wokha branch, Dr. KZ Ovung said different schools and colleges were invited to observe the World Red Cross Day every year. He also said the society has also raised Red Cross Corpus Fund to assist the district during calamities.
The society has sponsored 20 differently abled children and distributed Rs 500 each during Republic Day celebration this year besides conducting free medical camp at Wozhuro on March 25.
With the assistance from the society, students from Wokha district participated during State level painting and essay competition.
Mon observed the International Red Cross Day at DC conference hall.
Deputy Commissioner and Chairman IRCS Mon district branch, W Honje Konyak, while addressing the gathering, called for re-dedication to promote and inspire the human dignity.
“Our small contribution and volunteering to the needy and helpless will be great things for mankind,” he maintained. He also appealed to all the people of the district to be enrolled in Red Cross Society in order to help others through voluntary service. Medical Officer of District Hospital Mon, Dr. Ngampa Sangme, who was the resource person, spoke on the seven fundamental principles of Red Cross i.e. Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. He said International Red Cross Society (IRCS) was established in 1920 and now IRCS has 35 state and UT branches with 700 districts and sub-district.
The programme was chaired by Honorary Secretary, ICRS Mon District Branch, Nyamto Wangsha and relief distribution to handicapped was handed over by the Deputy Commissioner, Mon.
PEREN
Peren observed the World Red Cross Day with the staff and students of Baptist Higher Secondary School, at Peren Town Hall.
Chairman of IRCS Peren District Branch, Albert, spoke on the theme as well as the noble origin of the Red Cross movement by Sir Jean Henry Dunant which has been rendering humanitarian services across the world both in non-conflict areas and in war zones. He also encouraged the students and all others present to give their selfless services for the helpless and the needy in order to achieve universal ‘peace through humanity.’
The programme was chaired by Haideutad, vice vhairman IRCS Peren, while Dr. Hiazuheing Ndang, pastor of Police Baptist Church, invoked God’s blessings. I Heigang, Honourary Treasurer, proposed the vote of thanks and Nampeu Nza, Patron IRCS, closed the programme with a word of prayer.
