NSCW, in collaboration with the Social Welfare department, held a state-level consultation in Kohima to review the Nagaland Money Lenders Act, 2005.

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), in collaboration with the Social Welfare department, Government of Nagaland, and other stakeholders, organised a state-level consultation on the review of the Nagaland Money Lenders Act, 2005, at the SIRD conference hall, Kohima, on Friday.
The consultation was held in compliance with the mandate of the National Commission for Women (NCW) to review state-specific laws affecting women, assess the effectiveness of existing legislation and policies, and generate actionable recommendations.
In a press release, the NSCW stated that the consultation undertook a gender-sensitive review of the Nagaland Money Lenders Act with the objective of strengthening monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to ensure that registered money lenders comply with prescribed guidelines and ethical lending practices.
The exercise also sought to identify, regulate and penalise unregistered private money lenders and agencies operating outside the legal framework, while recommending robust amendments to the Act.
The overall objective was to create a lending environment where access to credit serves as a means of economic empowerment rather than a source of financial distress.
