State legal service hands over INR 33.65 lac. to 22 beneficiaries

[caption id="attachment_200585" align="aligncenter" width="500"] LS Jamir handing out compensations to representatives from the Kohima Destitute Home.[/caption] Dimapur, Aug. 11 (EMN): Justice LS Jamir, judge of Gauhati High Court who is also the executive chairman of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), on Aug. 10 handed over compensatory award of INR 33,65,000 to 22 recipients under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 at the conference hall of Gauhati High Court in Kohima. The judge awarded the compensation to the family members and care takers of three victims, while amount for the 19 victims will be handed over by the respective district legal services authorities to the family member and care taker of the victims, a press release received here on Friday from the legal authority informed. Delivering a speech, Neiteo Koza, project coordinator of the NSLSA appraised that Government of Nagaland had sanctioned INR 33,65,000 as compensation under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 to the 22 ‘rightful’ beneficiaries. She informed that seven applicants were recommended by Dimapur District Legal Services Authority, two by Kohima District Legal Services Authority, two by Mon District Legal Services Authority, three by Tuensang District Legal Services Authority, two by Phek District Legal Services Authority, two by Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority, one each by Wokha, Kiphire, Zunheboto, and the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority. Neiteo Koza appealed the state government to earmark and maintain separate budget as per the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 so that if any recommendation is made by the legal services authority, the victims can be given interim relief to meet their needs such as medical care, counseling, and other necessities required for rehabilitation. She pointed out that keeping a separate budget will save the valuable time, resource of the state government in as much as helping the victims.   New compensation scheme for women Koza has informed that a new scheme for women is introduced by the NALSA’s compensation scheme for women victims/survivors of sexual assault or other crimes, 2018. She said that the Supreme Court has given directive to all the state governments, union territories to implement it since May 2018, to which the Nagaland state government has also given a positive feedback and given assurance to implement it in the state. Delivering the concluding remarks, Mezivolu T Therieh, member secretary of the NSLSA thanked government of Nagaland for the timely release of the compensation, the judges presiding over the cases for doing justice to the family of the victim, public prosecutors and the investigation agencies for giving their best in going to the bottom of the case to prove that justice is done to the victim. Stating that such occasion are solemn moments where we remember the victim survivors and those who passed on, she also lauded the victims for braving all odds to come forward and speak up their rights. Registrar and deputy registrar of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench members of Childline, Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home, Public Prosector Kohima, Panel Lawyers of NSLSA and Kohima DLSA were present at the programme.
