Dimapur, November 3 : Protesting against what it called undemocratic detention of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi by police in New Delhi on November 2, the NPCC and DCC Dimapur on Thursday took out a march from Congress Bhavan, Dimapur to the DC office complex.
In this connection, the Congress members led by NPCC president K Therie submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur. The memorandum was handed over to ADC Dimapur. DCC Dimapur president Kughato S Aye and other Party leaders took part in the protest march, NPCC media cell said in a release today, NPCC media cell said in a release.
Condemning the “unlawful” and ‘undemocratic action” of NDA Government, the State Congress demanded that the President issue an advisory note to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a direction “to behave”, in accordance with the decorum of the Constitution.
The memorandum said the Congress women and men were deeply pained by the undemocratic and illegitimate action of the NDA Government in detaining Rahul Gandhi and other leaders. “We are also deeply embarrassed and ashamed before the world by the senseless display of police,” it stated.
Maintaining that paying homage to the martyr and comforting the bereaved family members are not crimes, the memo said the Congress believed that there are tens of lakhs of other Subedar Ram Kishan Grewals who are mentally driven to the point of no return. “Unable to bear the lethargy of NDA Government, Grewal gave his life for our tomorrow. The delay in operating OROP is nothing more than anti-veteran jawans and their dependents,” it said.
A former Rajputana Rifles subedar, the 70-year-old Grewal allegedly consumed poison at a Delhi park on Tuesday demanding the immediate implementation of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme - which, among other measures, ensures equal pension to retired soldiers who served with the same rank and for the same duration.
The state Congress also stated that the undemocratic detention of non-BJP political leaders while on peaceful humanitarian duty has once again raised the ugly head of the intolerance that the BJP Government led by Narendra Modi breeds.
“The action is gross violation of the freedom of expression, guaranteed to all citizens of India as fundamental rights under Article 19 (1) of the Constitution of India," the memo stated.
