  • DIMAPUR — In the lead-up to World Environment Day on June 5, the Silviculture Division, Kohima, in collaboration with the Nature’s Club of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, on Tuesday organised an environmental awareness programme at the State Botanical Garden, Aradura Hill, on the theme ‘Ending plastic pollution globally.’

  • In his keynote address, state silviculturist Dr. Prabhat Kumar highlighted the significance of the State Botanical Garden in plant conservation and environmental education. He also stressed on the profound impact of environment on health and societal development, an update stated.

  • Dr. Kumar stressed the urgent need to protect the environment, highlighting the theme 'Combating Plastic Pollution'. He emphasised that plastic waste's slow decomposition rate poses a significant environmental threat, polluting water, degrading soil, and harming air quality when burned.

  • He called for responsible civic behaviour, stating, “Change begins at home. Even small steps can lead to significant change. Every individual has a role to play in driving society forward.”

  • The programme also featured a special note by the Nature’s Club secretary of Kohima Science College. He outlined the club’s activities, including clean-up drives and eco-awareness campaigns.

  • He highlighted the lasting impact of plastic pollution, advocating for biodegradable alternatives, and emphasized that effective plastic management requires both global cooperation and local responsibility.

  • The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ruguonuo, followed by a cleanliness drive around the botanical garden, reinforcing the event’s message through collective action.

  • Earlier, the event chaired by Florence, Forest Ranger, commenced with an opening prayer by Sunep L Imsong, Forester-I.
