Dimapur, Aug. 10 (EMN): A diploma course in counselling psychology was introduced at St. Joseph’s College in Kohima on August 10.
The institution issued a press release to the media on Saturday informing about the development.
Dr. Zavise Rume of the State Council of Educational Research and Training, spoke about counselling as a profession, the updates stated.
“Counselling is gaining greater salience in the present times both from social, and employment perspectives. The contemporary social scenario has resulted in an increased need and demand for professional support in terms of counselling...” the press release stated. It is being increasingly recognized as an effective approach both for promoting ‘positives’ like strengthening families, fostering positive parenting, and increasing resilience of individuals in vulnerable situations.
Likewise, it is for addressing social-psychological problems, maladaptive behaviours, declining mental health and psychosomatic disorders that are being increasing witnessed in the present times, the updates stated.
However, the press release stated, although the need for counselling professionals is being increasingly felt, there is a dearth of professional support and experts who can lend a helping hand in promoting positive family processes and help individual family members in distress in a comprehensive way.
“As a result, there is a tremendous felt need for education and training in this area. By developing the requisite knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills in the area of counselling, this unique programme of study would help to train professional cadres in the field, equipping them for both wage-employment and self-employment, and thus fill the existing lacuna.”
Also, the principal of the college, Dr. S Ousepparmbil addressed the gathering. He was stated to have exhorted them to attend the course on counselling psychology for life.
Fr. C Joseph, counsellor and coordinator of the diploma in counselling psychology, organised the event with the cooperation of the student body, the updates stated.
The course is approved by the UGC from 2019, the press release stated.
